Highlights
We offer a service of integrity to thinking people - people who want to use their skills and experience to make a real difference and know how and where their money is spent. You will work with, not instead of local teachers empowering them example and best practice.
Many of the 3,000 children who rely on Samata School are listed as Domestic Labour or Factory Labour - left by their parents to be housed with a family while made to help with household chores or carpet weaving in return for bed and board. This is why although 3,000 depend on the school, there will normally be about 1,500 pupils there at any one time, because they are either at work or on an occasional visit to their home village. Many are orphans or have been separated from their families during the political upheavals, and for some of children depend, Samata is their only home.
For these children this is their only chance of any education. Many also rely on the school for a handful of rice at lunchtime and the most basic of medical care. The school is also the only place where many of these children are encouraged to develop their social and life skills.
The school pays special attention to the spiritual development of the child, with emphasis on learning about Nepal and its needs, learning about the importance of honesty and harmony, caring for others and living in peace in the world. Many of the children stress their desire to become doctors, nurses, social workers and teachers, wanting to make their own contribution and repay the debt they feel they owe for their education.
Examples of Itinerary.
Every placement is tailor made matching volunteer skills and experience to community need - therefore there is no typical itinerary! You can be sure though that your input will be part of a considered and sustainable plan. The main emphasis for volunteers at Samata is currently teaching, use and confidence-building in English language - mainly working with the older children who already have some English, but also empowering the staff through example and best practise. Volunteers work together as a team with at least one qualified teacher - anyone who enjoys working with children will be able to enhance this work.
Volunteers will be welcomed with any of the following skills and experience::
• educators to help build teacher capacity - pre-school, primary, senior
• the school has a real need to develop the English teaching skills
• English teachers - without English, children cannot pass their exams
• TEFL / EFL experience would be especially welcome
• teachers in all subjects who could work with 14-19 year olds in class and smaller groups
