Projects in Surin
Teaching English
Teaching is incredibly rewarding, Thai children are keen to learn and you are truly helping them prepare for a better future. Volunteers work 4 days a week from 8am to 4pm. Local staff will help with lesson plans and work alongside our volunteers.
During your long weekend there is the local area to explore. Surin is famous for handicrafts such as handmade jewelery, silk and elephants. You can spend one of your weekends at the elephant village homestay project. Further afield you have Thailand's oldest national park and the island of Ko Samet to explore. Our staff will help you with all your travel plans.
Starfish Farm
This project is based in Surin, one of Thailand poorest regions. Starfish has its own farm set on 4 Rai (8 football pitches) of land. We grow fruit, vegetables and have a fish farm. All produce is given away free of charge to the most needy people in the local community.
Volunteers will learn all about organic farming, help plant and harvest, and be involved in delivering produce to the villages. The schedule is a 4 day week from 8am to 4pm.

Community Work
Starfish organises a number of community projects throughout the year. We work with poor families, the elderly, children's homes and schools. Our work is extensive: Building, renovation, income generating projects, home farms, and redevelopment work. For individuals let us know your time and length of travel and we can let you know what projects are planned for that time. For groups projects can be specially organized to suit your needs.

Turtle Conservation
For those of you who love the beach and would like to learn all about turtles this is the placement for you. Volunteer leave near the beach on Thailand's Gulf Coast, each day travelling by boat to Turtle Island. On the island your main responsibility is helping look after the baby turtles in the hatchery. The turtles need feeding, their tanks need cleaning and medicines administered. Most of the work is in the mornings and you will have the afternoon free to explore the island, sun bath or relax under a tree.
Volunteers work a 4 day week, during the long weekend there are the islands of Ko Samet, Ko Chang and the seaside resort Pattaya to explore. Bangkok is only 3 hrs away if you fancy a sightseeing and/or shopping trip; not forgetting the night life.
Gap Year Project
Starfish has now launched a tailor made Gap Year Project; suitable for individuals, friends and groups. This is a packed four weeks combining volunteering, group travel, cultural experience and other activities such as a mini language and cooking course. You and your fellow travelers will be kept very busy over the 4 weeks with activities almost every day. The broader schedule is your first five days will be spent learning all about Thailand and experiencing Thai life firsthand. This includes orientation, the cooking course, language course, and several one day trips. Your next two weeks will be the volunteer part of your project. There are several options to choose from; teaching, child care, community work. Your last week is spent travelling with your fellow volunteers; from trekking in a national park to sunbathing and partying on an island.
